We’ve all told ourselves that we look so much better when we’re tanned – I admit my legs seem to look longer and thinner in shorts when tanned. Whether or not its true is beside the point – the voices in my head can be VERY persuasive.
But when does tanning become an addiction where you are obsessed with tanning ALL the time?
According to a recent NY Times article, 70% of indoor tanners are addicted to tanning. The University of Texas in Galveston conducted a study in which 2 tests of substance abuse were administered to 145 tanners on Galveston Island Beach. One test used was the CAGE test often used to identify alcohol addiction. CAGE is an acronym for four questions: Have you ever felt you needed to cut down on your tanning? Have people annoyed you by criticizing your tanning? Have you ever felt guilty about tanning? Have you ever felt you needed to tan first thing in the morning — as an eye opener? The test results found that 26% of beachgoers met the CAGE criteria for addiction.
The second test was a modified version of the psychiatric profession’s official diagnostic criteria for a substance abuse disorder where 53% of the respondents scored positive.
In another report in The Skin Cancer Foundation Journal, motivational factors for tanning addiction include:
- Positive appearance from tanning
- Mood enhancement (pleasure-giving endorphins released from the sun)
- Relaxation
- Socialization
The study also asserts that frequent tanners showed signs of both physiological and psychological dependence, which are linked to cigarette smoking and heavy drinking.
So just a heads up to all you indoor tanners and beach-goers this summer, please remember to not only use sunscreen at all times but to also curb your tanning sessions. As much as you think how fabulous you look tanned, melanoma is not a cute look.

Good news for all you sun lovers!
The FDA is currently working on new sunscreen labeling rules which should be ready by October of this year.
While there are standard test for checking protection from ultraviolet-B rays (causes sunburn), there are currently none for ultraviolet-A rays (causes cancer, wrinkles).
These new FDA standards will make labels less confusing to read so that consumers know exactly what kind of sun protection a product offers. Come October, there will be a standard testing protocol and a new 4-star UVA rating system that includes protection levels ranging from low, medium, high, and highest. Also, the highest SPF value would be 50 since there are no accurate tests to prove sun protection factor above 50.
In the meantime, don’t forget the basic sunscreen rules:
- Apply sunscreen at least 30 min. prior to going outside
- Re-apply every few hours especially after swimming

Yep – summer is finally here and you can’t wait to hit the pool or beach.
Here are our Summer must-haves to pack in your cute beach bag that won’t leave you looking like a hot mess (yes, pun intended):
Sunscreen: For your face, get at least one with minimum SPF30. For your body, I’m a huge fan of spray-on sunscreens since it’s so easy to apply especially on hard to reach spots like your back. Just make sure that you choose one that’s at least SPF 60 since there’s nothing worse than looking (and feeling) like a lobster. Remember to apply this at least 15-30 minutes before you head out and re-apply every 2-3hours after sweating or swimming.
Tinted Moisturizer: Skip foundation since it’ll just melt off in the sun and instead apply a tinted moisturizer that provides the same coverage and hydrates your skin at the same time. Find one that’s oil-free and offers sun protection with at least SPF 30
UV-shield Leave-in Hair Conditioner: Beach hair is sexy but post-sun strands aren’t. Wear a, leave-in conditioner with UV filters that’ll keep your locks hydrated
Lip Balm w/SPF: Like the rest of your face, your lips also need some sun protection. Find one that keeps your lift soft and hydrated and has minimum SPF 15
Blotting Paper: Great for getting rid of all the oil when you’re basking in the sun
We’d love to know what your top 3 summer beauty/skincare issues are – i.e. sun spots, dry skin, frizzy hair, etc.
Let us know and you’ll be automatically entered into our MARIE LOUISE SUMMER ESSENTIAL CONTEST for a chance to win 1 of 2 Marie Louise Cleansing Clear Gel, our dual-purpose makeup remover/facial cleanser (approximate retail value $57). Enter to win by submitting a comment below (please answer the contest question above) and make sure to leave a valid first and last name and e-mail address so we can properly contact you if you’re a winner.

Expiration dates. We’ve all seen them and wondered if they’re real or just a reason for us to buy more product before we actually run out.
Here’s the truth about expiration dates…

Expiration dates are real. Don't use product after the expiration date.
Fact: Expiration dates are real
Every ingredient has a shelf life, and some products have shorter shelf lives than others. But there’s no requirement to place an expiration date on a personal care product unless it includes ingredients regulated by the FDA (such as acne-fighting and sun protection ingredients).
For more information, click here
http://www.smartskincare.com/ingredients/fda/fda-on-shelf-life.html
Fact: Most ingredients start losing effectiveness as soon as you open them
Air, moisture, temperature all influence product effectiveness. Some of the best ingredients are also the most likely to lose effectiveness. Take anti-oxidants for example. Vitamin C, one of the more effective anti-oxidants, is one of the least stable. As soon as it’s exposed to air, it loses effectiveness. In other words, every time you open the product, more air gets in and the less effective the product is.

PAO symbols tell you when to throw away product after initial opening it.
Basically, by the time you reach the bottom of the bottle, tube or jar, the product might not actually do anything. While there’s no law in the US requiring expiration dates, some manufacturers have started to adopt the PAO, or Period After Opening, symbol. It’s a jar with a number and the letter M. It’s a guide for when to replace a product after opening.
Fact: Bacteria and fungus grows over time
Unless you sterilize your hands and product dispenser every time you use it, bacteria and fungus will grow in your skin care, hair care and makeup. Plus, most personal care products are kept in the bathroom, which tends to have higher humidity and bacteria levels because of the shower and toilet.

Use applicators like sponges or brushes to keep bacteria and fungus from growing
You can slow down the growth process by applying product with applicators, rather than your fingers. For example, instead of applying foundation with your finger, put it directly on the brush, sponge or your hand. The same goes for skin care. Don’t ever add water, or worse, your saliva to moisten product or applicators. It’s a sure-fire way to accelerate bacterial growth.
Fact: Preservatives protect against bacteria and fungal growth as well as extends shelf life
Products are that preservative-free or use synthetically-produced ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ preservatives will expire sooner than products that use preservatives proven to stabilize ingredients. If you choose to use organic, natural or preservative-free products, then plan on replacing them every three to six months.
Fact: Toss products that are more than 3 to 18 months old
Mascara and other eye products such as eye shadow should be tossed every three to six months. Liquid, crème or gel products should be replaced on 12- to 18-month intervals. Powder-based products (except eye shadow) should last from two to three years.
Sunscreen and sun block also lose effectiveness over time. Toss any sunscreen or sun block by its expiration date, including skin care or cosmetics with built-in sun protection.

The best way to rejuvenate skin, according to my boss- a 50 something year-old woman, who barely looks a day over 35 – is exfoliation. Her skin is plump, bright, glowing, with very little lines. Not an ounce of flake!
I asked her what her secret was…. Good genes? Foreign products made in silence by monks? Nope: “I scrub my face like crazy with a loofah every morning under the hot shower. Scrubbing dead skin away is the key!”
So I tried it. The results? Well, lets just say I didn’t feel like going out that night. Not all of us have thick skin! But it got me thinking: there’s got to be a better way to shed the dead skin cells that are clogging my pores. And that’s when my desperate search to properly exfoliate my skin started!
Remember that whole at-home-microdermabrasion-craze? Sure, massaging my skin with pea-size beads made out of walnuts shells and ingredients I could not pronounce exfoliated dead skin. In fact, it exfoliated most of my skin away, leaving it blotchy, red and sensitized. NOT what I was looking for. Neither were all the scrubs, peels, serums and magic washcloths that followed: the chemicals in most of the products only managed to assault my skin, causing it to flare-up!
Little did I know that over-exfoliating, just like hard water, weather and pollution, is actually harmful to your skin. So what’s a girl to do?
Please meet Marie Louise’s Restoration Clear Gel. First of all and most important, this exfoliating gel is actually hydrating and nourishing, thanks to ingredients such as desalted deep sea water, glycerin and algae extracts, known to help the skin retain moisture. It literally melts as your skin absorbs it, dry grains gently (and that’s the key word one should look for in all products) lifting away impurities and dead skin. Once they have ceased to appear and have been rinsed off with warm water you are left with a bright and pure complexion. Since it’s gentle enough, you can use it more often; this regular regimen will allow your skin to absorb all the benefits your moisturizers, masks and serums have to offer, thus making them more effective! It will also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles- after all, it’s no secret that the cleaner your skin is, the younger and healthier it looks!
Just remember: you shouldn’t need sandpaper to get results!
