Congratulations on finally finding the perfect skincare brand for you (we know, its quite a challenge) but if you don’t know how to use them properly, what’s the point?

HOW TO WASH YOUR FACE. We know, we know…washing your face is pretty simple, right? WRONG.

1. WASH YOUR HANDS FIRST: Remember those late nights when you’re too tired to take a shower but congratulate yourself for at least removing your  makeup and washing your face? Well did you remember to WASH YOUR HANDS FIRST? If you don’t wash your hands first with soap, all that dirt and bacteria just end up on your face.

2. WARM NOT HOT WATER: Its not like doing your laundry – the hotter the water, the more it will strip off your face’s protective oils leaving it dry and fragile. Wet your face with warm water.

3. CLEANSE GENTLY: You only need about a nickel-size amount of facial cleanser so lather it between your damp hands and then using your fingertips, gently massage it into your skin with a circular motion. Do NOT RUB too aggressively and NEVER USE A WASHCLOTH since it’ll just chafe your skin.

4. BE THOROUGH: Don’t be lazy. Start at your forehead, then  move down your nose, across your cheeks and then your chin. Don’t forget your hairline, eyebrows, and neck. You need at least 30 seconds to ensure that all the dirt is removed from all areas of your face.

5. RINSE COMPLETELY: Wash the cleanser off by repeatedly splashing COLD water over your face. It should take you a few minutes to rinse off all the cleanser because if you don’t, the cleanser residue will just irritate your face. Blot your face gently with a towel.

6. MOISTURIZE: Once your face is completely dry, seal it immediately with moisturizer.

Now you’re ready for your beauty sleep!

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, Consumer Reports just released their Sunscreen Report which tested 22 different sunscreen brands (sprays, creams, and lotions).

Pretty interesting results:

• Go for Dual-Protection: 9 out of the 22 sunscreens offered excellent protection from both UVB and UVA rays

• All Types are OK: No one type of sunscreen – spray, cream or lotion was better than the other in providing coverage

• Price Doesn’t Matter: When choosing a sunscreen, a higher price doesn’t necessarily mean its a better product. La Roche-Posay at $18.82 per ounce  scored lower than the No-Ad at $0.59 per ounce

• Best Buys: Up & Up Sport SPF30, No-Ad SPF45, Equate by SPF50, Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof SPF 30

• Anything over SPF 30 Doesn’t Work: Above SPF 30, there’s not much more protection

While we’ve always thought of British beauty as being the typical “English rose” in terms of their pale, translucent skin, looking back on England’s history of the ideal beauty is surprising:

The Ideal British Beauty: Elizabeth I with her overly plucked eyebrows, white skin and black teeth

• PALE FACES: In 13th century England, women whitened their face and chest area with ceruse (a vinegar-powdered egg mixture) that literally ate away at their skin. (Queen Elizbeth I was a perfect example). Other extreme measures were applying leeches to the skin or cutting their veins to drain blood to give them the pale look

• LOOK-NO- EYEBROWS: In the 1700′s, women would shave off their eyebrows and glue on mouse fur (EW…out of all the furs to use, mouse fur really?)

• LIPSTICK BAN: In 1770, British Parliament banned the wearing of lipstick stating that “women found guilty of seducing men into matrimony by cosmetic means should be tried for witchcraft”

• BLACK TEETH:  Queen Elizabeth I had black teeth due to her fondness for sugar and poor oral hygiene, and unknowingly set a trend for black teeth at the time

• URINE HAIR DYE: In the Elizabethan era, fair hair was considered fashionable so women would sometimes use urine to dye/bleach their own hair (guess the smell was worth it?)

• BELLADONNA EYEDROPS: Belladona is one of the most poisonous plants in the Western hemisphere and during the Victorian era, women used belladona drops to dilate their pupils which at the time were considered to be beautiful. Prolonged usage however ended up in blindness for some women
