New FDA Sunscreen Standards in Oct

Good news for all you sun lovers!

The FDA is currently working on new sunscreen labeling rules which should be ready by October of this year.

While there are standard test for checking protection from ultraviolet-B rays (causes sunburn), there are currently none for ultraviolet-A rays (causes cancer, wrinkles).

These new FDA standards will make labels less confusing to read so that consumers know exactly what kind of sun protection a product offers. Come October, there will be a standard testing protocol and a new 4-star UVA rating system that includes protection levels ranging from low, medium, high, and highest. Also, the highest SPF value would be 50 since there are no accurate tests to prove sun protection factor above 50.

In the meantime, don’t forget the basic sunscreen rules:

  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 min. prior to going outside
  • Re-apply every few hours especially after swimming

Got Mercury? The Newest Ingredient in Skin Whitening Creams

red cream jarJust when you thought the only problem with buying skin whitening creams was its ineffectiveness, you may have to worry about something much more serious…like mercury poisoning.

According to a recently-released study done by the Chicago Tribune, high levels of mercury were found in some skin lightening creams promising skin lightening and the elimination of age spots and freckles. Out of 50 skin-lightening creams bought in Chicago stores and online that were sent to be tested, 6 were found to contain high levels of mercury which is enough to cause kidney damage over time. The 6 tainted creams were manufactured in Lebanon, China, India, Pakistan, and Taiwan.

Click here to see a list of the tainted products

The FDA banned mercury in skin-bleaching and lightening products in 1990 but it seems that there are still tainted products in the marketplace. Mercury is known to prevent melanin production which gives pigmentation to hair and skin. Effects of mercury include blurred vision, trouble walking, the shutting down of organs like the kidneys, and eventual death.

Besides mercury, two other ingredients sometimes found in skin lighteners concern medical experts — steroids and hydroquinone. High amounts of hydroquinone, a bleaching agent, may darken skin, and animal studies suggest it could cause cancer.

But not to worry ladies! Fortunately, there are responsible skincare and cosmetics brands out there such as Marie Louise whose products do not contain any toxic ingredients like mercury. We here at Marie Louise have always prided ourselves on educating our customers accurately and honestly which is why we list all our product ingredients on our website and all product packaging.

Our advice to you: Do your research and always check the product ingredients before purchasing!

Thinking Healthy About Anti-Aging

Vital Nanoemulsion stylized home

Marie Louise Vital Nanoemulsion a-VC (Beauty Essence Serum)

Thanks to all our lovely ladies who not only entered our Marie Louise Vital contest a few weeks ago, but also brought up some important concerns regarding anti-aging.

We asked Coco Pai, one of our fabulous estheticians, to address your major concerns and here’s what she had to say:

BROWN SPOTS

  • Major Causes: Sun damage, Aging, Genetics, Improper Skincare
  • Suggested Treatment: Unfortunately, brown spots are very hard to eliminate entirely and only laser treatment is the fastest and easiest way to get rid of them. In the meantime, make sure to wear sunscreen with minimum SPF30 to reduce further brown spots

ACNE SCARS

  • Major Causes: Picking at acne, Severe Acne, Genetics
  • Suggested Treatment: In order to prevent and treat acne scars, you must reduce breakouts as much as possible. First, consult a dermatologist to determine proper acne treatment. Then, you must hydrate by using a moisturizing toner to keep the oil under control, and also drinking a lot of water. During severe breakout, get facials as needed (twice a week / once a month) to help your acne heal. More importantly, resist the temptation to pick at your acne!

WRINKLES

  • Major Causes: Sun damage, Changes in Hormones, Genetics
  • Suggested Treatment: Using anti-aging creams that contains Vitamins A&C such as the Marie Louise Vital Nanoemulsion a-VC anti-aging beauty serum, Must wear  sunscreen on a daily basis (minimum SPF30)

For more info on the Marie Louise anti-aging serum, go to: http://www.marielouisecosmetics.com/products_vital_nanoemulsion_a_vc.html

UNDER-EYE BAGS

  • Major Causes: Aging, Genetics, Bad Circulation
  • Suggested Treatment: Like brown spots, under-eye bags are extremely difficult to treat in terms of permanent elimination. One serious option to consider is cosmetic surgery. Otherwise, temporary fixes include using eye-creams (gently swipe under the eyes instead of rubbing), drinking water (not too much before sleeping) and more importantly – getting enough sleep. There’s a reason why it’s called beauty sleep, ladies!

Coco insists that “aging is just a natural way of life. Unfortunately, there are no immediate treatments that will instantly work. But what you can control is further preventing more damage to your skin by consistently wearing sunscreen every day. There are so many beauty & skincare products that now have SPF so no excuses!”

Expiration Dates: Fact or Fiction

Expiration dates. We’ve all seen them and wondered if they’re real or just a reason for us to buy more product before we actually run out.

Here’s the truth about expiration dates…

Expiration dates are real. Don't use product after the expiration date.

Expiration dates are real. Don't use product after the expiration date.

Fact: Expiration dates are real
Every ingredient has a shelf life, and some products have shorter shelf lives than others. But there’s no requirement to place an expiration date on a personal care product unless it includes ingredients regulated by the FDA (such as acne-fighting and sun protection ingredients).

For more information, click here
http://www.smartskincare.com/ingredients/fda/fda-on-shelf-life.html

Fact: Most ingredients start losing effectiveness as soon as you open them
Air, moisture, temperature all influence product effectiveness. Some of the best ingredients are also the most likely to lose effectiveness. Take anti-oxidants for example. Vitamin C, one of the more effective anti-oxidants, is one of the least stable. As soon as it’s exposed to air, it loses effectiveness. In other words, every time you open the product, more air gets in and the less effective the product is.

PAO symbols tell you when to throw away product after initial opening it.

PAO symbols tell you when to throw away product after initial opening it.

Basically, by the time you reach the bottom of the bottle, tube or jar, the product might not actually do anything. While there’s no law in the US requiring expiration dates, some manufacturers have started to adopt the PAO, or Period After Opening, symbol. It’s a jar with a number and the letter M. It’s a guide for when to replace a product after opening.

Fact: Bacteria and fungus grows over time
Unless you sterilize your hands and product dispenser every time you use it, bacteria and fungus will grow in your skin care, hair care and makeup. Plus, most personal care products are kept in the bathroom, which tends to have higher humidity and bacteria levels because of the shower and toilet.

makeup sponge LK

Use applicators like sponges or brushes to keep bacteria and fungus from growing

You can slow down the growth process by applying product with applicators, rather than your fingers. For example, instead of applying foundation with your finger, put it directly on the brush, sponge or your hand. The same goes for skin care. Don’t ever add water, or worse, your saliva to moisten product or applicators. It’s a sure-fire way to accelerate bacterial growth.

Fact: Preservatives protect against bacteria and fungal growth as well as extends shelf life
Products are that preservative-free or use synthetically-produced ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ preservatives will expire sooner than products that use preservatives proven to stabilize ingredients. If you choose to use organic, natural or preservative-free products, then plan on replacing them every three to six months.

Fact: Toss products that are more than 3 to 18 months old
Mascara and other eye products such as eye shadow should be tossed every three to six months. Liquid, crème or gel products should be replaced on 12- to 18-month intervals. Powder-based products (except eye shadow) should last from two to three years.

Sunscreen and sun block also lose effectiveness over time. Toss any sunscreen or sun block by its expiration date, including skin care or cosmetics with built-in sun protection.

Marie Louise Vital Contest Giveaway

cosmetic bottlesAre you sick and tired of being told that “you’re not getting any younger”? Is it really necessary to remind me that as each day goes by, I’m getting older?

Earlier this year, a research study done by the NPD Group on women’s skincare reported that anti-aging continued to be a key factor for women buying skincare products. 53% of women surveyed said that anti-aging benefits such as wrinkle/line reduction and firming/lifting were extremely important in facial skincare products. When it’s broken down by age group, NPD found that 65% were ages 55+, 62% were between 35-54, and 26% were ages 18-34.

It made me wonder why women in general waited until they got older until they started using beauty products with anti-aging benefits. Instead of waiting for those tell-tale aging signs of wrinkles or sagging skin, shouldn’t we just start using these products earlier? Isn’t the whole point of using these products to PREVENT aging signs?

As my hey-you’re-not-getting-any-younger-reminding mom used to tell me, it’s like drinking water AFTER spending a day out in the sun.

So what do you think?

When shopping for beauty/skincare products, what anti-aging concerns do you have – fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, age spots, sun damage, lack of collagen, sagging, eye bags, etc.?

Let us know and you’ll be automatically entered into our MARIE LOUISE VITAL CONTEST for a chance to win 1 of 3 Marie Louise Vital Nanoemulsion a-VC (an anti-aging & brightening serum with an approximate retail value of $75). Enter to win by submitting a comment below (please answer the contest question above) and make sure to leave a valid name and e-mail address so we can properly contact you if you’re a winner.

No purchase necessary. One entry per person/e-mail address. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States (void in Puerto Rico, Guam, and other U.S Commonwealth & Territories) who are 18 years of age at the date of entry.

Celeb Skin at Non-Celeb Prices

girl with water reflectionGreat makeup should complement rather than compete with your outfit and what better example than last week’s annual Met Costume Institute Ball in NYC. With stars like Blake Lively, Sienna Miller, and Jessica Biehl all looking gorgeous with their luminous skin, it got me thinking on how I can pull off the same dewy, glowing but natural-looking skin.  Where to begin?  If you’re like me and are constantly prone to acne and other unfortunate skin blemishes, it’s tough to even feel confident putting on makeup.

As a leading esthetician with over 15 years of skincare consulting both in the U.S and Asia, Coco Pai (she is indeed as fabulous as her name) believes that taking care of your skin is vital to looking good and aging gracefully. “Bad skin is not due to bad genes or heredity, but rather to bad skincare practices, bad diet, and environmental factors. I grew up in Taiwan where skincare is taken very seriously with most women getting facials at least once a month,” Coco explains.

Hear are Coco’s tips on how to get celebrity skin without the hefty price tag:

  • Wear sunscreen: I can’t emphasize this enough – it is so important to protect your face against the sun so use sunscreen at all times (minimum SPF 30). There are foundations and concealers that now have SPF so no excuses!
  • Commit to Your Skin: We have a Chinese saying that “There are no ugly women – just lazy women.” Ladies, I found my new mantra! Healthy skin requires a lifestyle change – if you are serious about maintaining healthy skin, you have to commit to a skin regiment. If possible, meet with an esthetician or dermatologist who can expertly determine what your skin type is and use skincare products that are specifically tailored to your skin type. The basic skin types include Oily (large pores on T-zone and cheeks), Dry (small pores), Combination (large pores on T-zone), and Sensitive (redness).
  • Remove your Makeup: Don’t be lazy! You must remove your makeup before going to bed.

  • Exfoliate: As you age, your skin cells no longer generate as quickly so exfoliating is an absolute must. Just be careful on how frequently you exfoliate since it depends on your skin type.

  • Use Toner: Contrary to the popular belief, toner is essential for skin hydration. Use toner AFTER cleansing your face and BEFORE moisturizing. Find a toner that best suits your skin. A lot of my clients love Marie Louise’s Moistraser a-VC since its hydrating enough to be a moisturizer for ALL skin types from normal, dry, to oily.

For more info, check outhttp://www.marielouisecosmetics.com/products_moistraiser_a_vc.html

So the next time you see Demi Moore’s stunning face, just remember the Chinese saying about “lazy” women.

E-Coli: The Newest Makeup Ingredient?

cream jar hand yellow flowerThe next time you’re shopping around for new makeup, beware of the samples labeled “testers’. A recent LA Times article disclosed findings from a two-year study on public makeup testers: http://www.latimes.com/features/image/la-ig-testers-20100418,0,7091657.story

When tests were done on public makeup counters in department stores, specialty stores and drugstores, they found staph, strep, and even E.Coli bacteria on makeup testers. If that doesn’t freak you out, this finding will – when they tested the makeup on Saturdays which has the most customer traffic at cosmetic counters – THE PERCENTAGE OF TAINTED MAKEUP WAS 100%.

OMG. As if you don’t have enough things to worry about like whether that self-tanner makes you look like an oompa loompa.

So how do you try out new makeup/beauty products without physically testing them? While it’s recommended that you really shouldn’t try on any publicly-tested makeup on your eyes, lips, and nose, if you still feel the need to try on that new shade of pink lipstick, here are some tips to remember:

  • Make Weekday Visits: Go during the week when there are fewer customers. If you don’t currently carry one in your purse, bring an anti-bacterial hand gel or pack of wipes with you.
  • Use Tester Apps: Always use plastic, disposable applicators or cotton swabs like the ones at stores like Sephora. If you’re at a department store, don’t be afraid to ask the customer service rep behind the counter.
  • Use Bottled Products: Try bottled products of lotions or foundations instead of ones that are in jars or palettes so that you can squeeze or pour them directly on your hand instead of using your fingers to scoop them out.
  • Scrape the Lipstick Tip: Use a disposable applicator or a tissue paper to scrape off the tip or use a tissue paper.
  • Eye & Lip Pencils: Sharpen the tip using mini sharpeners.
  • Use the Spray Alcohol Bottle: Use an alcohol spray bottle to lightly spray the product. Wait a few seconds for the alcohol to evaporate before testing.
  • Remove Tested Makeup ASAP: Remove makeup immediately with anti-bacterial wipes or makeup remover after testing.

So if shopping for beauty/skincare products isn’t scary enough in the first place, now you’ve got some real grossness to deal with.

We all like gifts with purchases but some freebies are better left at the cosmetic counter.

I HEART YOU MOM

Me and Mommy at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens in New Zealand

Me and Mommy at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens in New Zealand

Ok you promised yourself last year that you would come up with a totally creative gift for mom by planning ahead. Well, if planning ahead this year meant one week before the big I HEART YOU MOM day, then you better get a move-on if you still haven’t thought of anything yet.

Stop stressing about out what she wants and think about what she actually needs. Why not give her the gift of quality one-on-one time with you? Pamper yourself AND your mom with the following gift guide ideas. No fuss, no muss!

Beauty on the Go

Treat mom to a new haircut at a fabulous salon (please say no to Supercuts at least for Mother’s Day) and afterwards to a nearby Sephora where she can get a complimentary beauty session. Surprise her with gift bags of new hair and beauty products to complement her new look!

Spa Day

Log onto http://www.spafinder.com/ for a spa near you and book a spa service whether it’s a fun mani/pedi or a soothing massage. Make sure you get to the spa a few hours earlier than your appointment so that you can relax and spend some time catching up before your spa sessions!

Cooking Classes

Not that you’re hinting that she needs to touch up on her cooking, but spending an hour or two creating and eating yummy foods together isn’t a bad way to spend  a day on the weekend. And the best part about cooking classes? ABSOLUTELY NO CLEANUP INVOLVED. Now which mom wouldn’t love that?

Check out local cooking classes near you such as Sur La Table http://cookingclasses.surlatable.com/ or the Institute of Culinary Education http://rec.iceculinary.com/

Or if you prefer more specialized classes, check out local restaurants, pastry shops or even wine shops like: baking classes @ Gourmandise Desserts http://www.gourmandisedesserts.com/classes.php or wine tasting classes @ Mario Batali’s NYC Otto http://www.ottopizzeria.com/special_events.cfm

Shopping + Tea Time

Take your mom shopping at one of the “Big 5” department stores: Barneys, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Nordstroms, or Saks. Yes, its quite a splurge but I think Mom deserves some stylish new additions to her wardrobe, no? Afterwards, set aside your shopping bags and enjoy afternoon tea-time served at most luxury hotels such as the Peninsula and Four Seasons. With various options on mini sandwiches, petit fours, scones and more served with tea, it’s a perfect way to end an already fantastic day with Mom.

Get Your Culture On

If your mom is into art, design, or architecture, spend a day visiting museums or galleries, historical house museums or botanical gardens. Check out your local listings online and plan early for tours. Follow up next with reservations for dinner with ANY lovely view whether it’s the beach, a garden, or a cityscape.

No matter what you end up doing for Mother’s Day, just remember that it’s all about appreciating and enjoying the lovely woman who you call Mom.  Show the love not just on Mother’s Day but every day!
