Sunscreen 101: 5 Rules You Need to Know Before Buying Sunscreen

With Memorial Day weekend coming up, we all know that summer is just around the corner so its time for you to finally learn how to BUY and APPLY sunscreen the right away.

Here’s are 5 rules on making SUNSCREEN SIMPLE:

  • DON’T BUY ANYTHING OVER SPF50: With the FDA still deciding on sunscreen regulations (hello, its been a year already), they’ve at least admitted that there isn’t enough conclusive evidence that anything over SPF50 is more effective than anything below SPF50. So save your money and stick to SPF50 for your body and a minimum of SPF30 for your face.
  • BUY BROAD SPECTRUM PROTECTION: Look for the words “broad spectrum” on the sunscreen label since it means that your sunscreen will block and protect you from ultraviolet A rays (which don’t burn but penetrate farther into your skin) and B rays (which cause sunburn). Both rays age your skin and increase skin cancer risk.
  • FOR SENSITIVE SKIN, USE MINERAL-BASED SUNSCREEN: Mineral-based sunscreen physically block rays rather than absorb them are are less likely to produce itchiness or other allergic reactions for those who have sensitive skin. Look for Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide on the sunscreen label.
  • GET WATER-RESISTANT SUNSCREEN: If you’ll be in the water or sweat a lot under the sun, get water-resistant sunscreen such as the wax-based sunscreen sticks which won’t run into your eye
  • HOW TO GET FULL COVERAGE: Most people don’t know how to apply sunscreen properly. These are the common areas that people forget about and end up painfully burning: back of the neck, top ears, lower back, butt, hips, shoulder blades, and the bridge of the nose. Finally, apply it at least 30 minutes before going outside and must be re-applied every 2 hours and more frequently after swimming, sweating or toweling off.

Since sunscreen nowadays comes in all forms – lotions, sprays (my favorite since its incredible for hard-to-reach areas like your back or the backs of your legs), and sticks, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE on why you can’t get a sunscreen that’s perfect for you.

Now go out there and enjoy the sun safely!
